The Families We Work With

At the gift of oil we are privileged to work closely with a handful of extremely knowledgeable and talented artisan families with whom we are proud to produce our authentic olive oils and balsamics.

Di Lorenzo Family

Di Lorenzo Family

In Sicily our partners are the Di Lorenzo family who own the magnificent Disisa estate set in a majestic landscape in the hills of north western Sicily.

The estate has been in the hands of the Di Lorenzo family for well over two hundred years and is today run by Renato Di Lorenzo and his wife Maria Paola, ably assisted by their two children Mario and Laura.

The word Disisa is derived from the Arabic for “splendid” and it is obvious why the land was so named! The farmhouse itself is built around a beautiful, traditional courtyard and has a terrace with a stunning view rolling for mile after mile into the very heart of the island’s rugged mountains. It is with this view that we enjoy Maria Paola’s traditional Italian meals in the evenings, usually with a glass or two of Disisa wine!

Dating back to Norman times, this ancient farm covers 400 hectares of olive groves, vineyards for the production of wine and wine vinegars, along with orchards and herb gardens to grow the many different ingredients such as lemons, mint and basil used in our infused olive oils.

It is a magical place with a warm and welcoming family who create truly superb olive oil and wine vinegar.

Verrini Family

Verrini Family

We work with two families in Modena to produce our balsamic vinegars. The first is the Verrini family who have a beautifully tranquil estate in the countryside to the north of the city. There the Trebbiano and Lambrusco grapes used to make the balsamics are grown, crushed, and then matured in ancient oak barrels.

The main man in the family business is Nicolo Verrini who, for such a young man, has a vast amount of knowledge about grapes and creating balsamic vinegar. His expertise is both practical and theoretical; he has been working on the estate since he was an infant at the feet of his grandfather and later his father, and has gone on to study Viticulture and Oenology (the science of grape growing and wine making) at the University of Bologna. Nicolo has been invaluable in helping us to create our Classic and Reserve ranges of balsamic and our delicious and unique infusions are the result of many hours spent creating with him in the estates’ tasting rooms.

Tagliavini Family

Tagliavini Family

The second familly we work with in Modena are the Tagliavinies who own a stunning estate and acetaia close to the city. Mr Tagliavini himself is a larger than life character who at almost eighty years of age has over 50 years of "hands on" balsamic vinegar making experience.

Making aged balsamic vinegar of the highest quality is his true passion, and he is immensely proud of his products and his estate.

His Acetaia is an Aladdin’s cave of ancient, lovingly cared for barrels of oak, juniper, ash, mulberry and cherry, some of which contain balsamic vinegar up to 200 years old. The barrels alone are worth a fortune but when the value of the balsamic is factored in too, his Acetaia is worth millions.

Mr Tagliavini makes our superb Vintage balsamic vinegar in these barrels. Like the Classic and the Reserve ranges it is made from Trebbiano and Lambrusco grapes grown on his land, crushed and then matured in his beautiful wooden barrels for at least twelve years. When the vinegar is eventually bottled it has the most remarkable flavour which words simply cannot describe or do justice to.
