Our Pellegrino Riserva extra virgin olive oil is a full-bodied, intensely flavoured high polyphenol oil from Puglia, in Italy's deep south. Made from hand-picked Coratina olives, it's very green, very strong and very intense — fruity yet pleasantly bitter, with the markedly peppery finish typical of a fine Puglian oil. It's superb for dressing hearty pasta, meat and vegetable dishes.
Its polyphenol content is exceptional: 443mg per kilogram — well above the 250mg per kilogram that EU Regulation 432/2012 requires for an oil to claim health benefits — so it's a true high polyphenol oil, wonderful drizzled over food or taken by the spoonful. Being pure extra virgin olive oil, it's suitable for vegetarians and vegans, and gluten free.
What makes it a Riserva is the early harvest. The olives are picked in October, early in the season, with a colour mix of 90% green to just 10% black — far greener than the gentler 70/30 mix picked later from November to January. Harvesting the olives while they're this green is what gives the oil its intense, robust, powerful character.
The olives are grown on the Pellegrino family estate, La Spinetta, near the town of Andria, west of Bari in northern Puglia. The finished oil is presented in a distinctive matt-black tube that keeps its precious contents out of the light, preserving its exceptional quality.
