Our Merula extra virgin olive oil is a distinctive Spanish oil from Extremadura, in the country's west — a beautifully balanced blend of four olive varieties: Arbequina (50%), Hojiblanca (20%), Picual (15%) and the rare Marisca (15%), which grows only in Extremadura. On the palate, tangerine, apple peel and ripe tomato give way to a nutty creaminess, balanced by more ripe tomato, a fresh cos-lettuce note and gentle black pepper on the finish.
It's a genuine high polyphenol oil, with 252mg of polyphenols per kilogram — meeting the 250mg per kilogram threshold that EU Regulation 432/2012 sets for an oil to claim health benefits. Being pure extra virgin olive oil, it's suitable for vegetarians and vegans, and gluten free.
Merula is produced by Don Alonso, the Marqués de Valdueza, on his Perales de Valdueza estate in Extremadura, and presented in a superbly designed, award-winning tin. Its name means "blackbird" in Latin — after the many blackbirds that fly around the Marqués's magnificent estate.
