Our Sicilian Early Harvest extra virgin olive oil is a fresh, green and robust high polyphenol oil made from 100% Cerasuola olives, picked in October while they are still very green. It has an intensely fresh, grassy character, a bold, robust flavour and a peppery kick on the finish — very much an oil for the true connoisseur. It's a limited edition, and after a smaller harvest it's even more limited than usual this year.
It's a fantastic dipping oil with warm, fresh bread, and wonderful drizzled over salads, mashed potatoes, meats, seafood, roasted vegetables, bruschetta, antipasti and soups — or mix it three parts oil to one part of one of our balsamic vinegars for the perfect dressing. It's also ideal taken by the spoonful as part of a "feel good, live longer" regime: early harvest olives are naturally richer in chlorophyll and polyphenols, giving it even more health benefits than the already well known benefits of extra virgin olive oil. This year's polyphenol level is to be confirmed while lab results are pending; last year's oil tested at 566mg per kilogram, and we're hopeful this year's will be even higher. Being pure extra virgin olive oil, it's suitable for vegetarians and vegans, and gluten free.
The oil is grown, hand-picked and cold-pressed for us by our partners, the Di Lorenzo family, on their magnificent Disisa Estate in Northern Sicily. Traditionally in Sicily, olives are harvested in November and December when they are at their largest, but the olives for this single-varietal, single-estate oil are picked weeks earlier and cold-pressed immediately, using the latest technology so that absolutely no heat is created in the process — then bottled exclusively for The Gift of Oil.
